HostGator was founded in 2002 by Brent Oxley who is also the current chairman of the company. He started the company while he was studying at Florida Atlantic University.
Hostgator is a very reputed company and is almost a household name for anyone familiar with web hosting.
The sezi of customer base makes Hostgator one of the top most hosting providers in the world.
Hostgator's hosting features:
Hostgator is one of many companies that offer unlimited of many features at a very low price. These unlimited features are just a marketing ploy to convince potential customers. But if the hosting space or bandwidth usage reaches higher levels, the accounts are suspended. This is an industry wide practice and Hostgator is also guilty of using this practice to attract customers.
The feature set of Hostagator's services is quite common and can be compared to any other hosting company. They offer PHP-MySQL combination on all hosting accounts. In addition to that, they do have some additional programing language support like Perl, Ruby on Rails, Python and Fast CGI.
Hostgator offers cPanel as the control panel for all their hosting packages.
Hostgator offers Shared Hosting, VPS Hosting, Re-seller Hosting and Dedicated Server hosting.
Hostgator's plans and pricing:
The cheapest plan is shared hosting plan for $4 per month, but only with a 3 year contract. The three year contract term is quite unrealistic as no one wants to get into such a long contract.
If paid monthly, the base plan costs $7 per month.
VPS hosting starts from $20 per month with 384MB of RAM and goes up to $210 per month with $GB+ of RAM.
Re-seller hosting is cheap starting from $25 per month with 50 GB of disk space - enough to host hundreds of accounts.
Dedicated servers start from $139 per month and go up to $300 per month. All servers are Xeon Quad Core with varying amount of RAM and disk space for each plan.
For dedicated servers, Hostgator offers both Windows and Linux based plans.
HostGator has over 4,00,000 customers and supporting such a large customer base is the biggest challenge for any company.
But Hostagtor's customer reviews are mostly positive and average time to respond to most queries is only a few minutes.
But some customers complain about not receiving quality support and some even complain of support queries getting lost in the process and resulting in no support at all.
For a company with such a large customer base, expecting a quick and personalized support is a very unrealistic expectation.
